Aleph and Other Stories 1933-1969
Published in Paperback by E P Dutton (February, 1979)
Average review score:

Major magicianThis excellent collection of short stories is an example of the "esthetic of the intelligence" of Borges. His metaphysic storytelling always goes beyond the immediate, to other cultures, other frontiers and other realities. Borges seeks to capture the essence of Universe and Time, and as a result, he creates stories with an exquisite poetry and an abismal, even terrifying depth. The ones I like the most are. "The immortal", an overwhelming and disconcerting study of the effects immortality would have on humans; "The theologians", an allegory about personal identity, full of erudition and irony; "Emma Zunz", the only realistic tale in the collection, about a sick and terrible revenge; "In search of Averroes", an attempt at depicting the failure of a philosopher who is unable to distinguish between comedy and tragedy; "The writing of the God", or the aprehension of divinity from a pit, thanks to the signs stamped on a jaguar's skin; "The waiting", anguished tale about a resignation and the transformation of reality into dream; and especially "Aleph", fantastic story about that point in the Universe where all points in the Universe meet; a tale that mixes the remembrance of a woman still loved after death, with the absolute vision af the Absolute: the point from where you can see all points. Simply splendid, Borges's literature stands out alone in the history of all literature. There is nothing to which it can be compared. Check for yourself the dimensions of one literary giant. Come find out what you thought you'd never be looking for.

Argentina (Culture Shock!)
Published in Paperback by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. (May, 2002)
Average review score:

Just the ticket for American travelersMy husband and I recently took a trip to Argentina, reading this book before we went, and bringing it along to reference while we were there. With the obvious exception of economic information (the economic crisis there wasn't in full swing until after this book was published), the information presented was dead on. Because of it, we were way ahead of the game in terms of understanding the local customs, habits, and manners, and we felt much more at ease in this new environment than many of our fellow travellers did. The book is written in a clear and amusing way, making the fascinating Argentinian culture acessable to all. One would expect a certian amount of the information to be out of date, but even so it seemed pretty accurate, right down to some of the popular rock musicians. A must read for anyone planning on a trip there!

Argentina (Dropping in on)

Drop In On Argentina is betther then I expectedA very pleasent book. Very positive. Good for kids in primary grades. It shows Argentina from beautiful Buenos Aires, to Tierra Del Fuego, the southernmost city in the world. It is a "easy to read" book, with plenty of pictures that will take you on a trip around the country. It shows Argentina's cowboys, food, dance, water falls and more. It makes it easy to picture the country's location on the globe by using simple explanations as the meaning of the word "hemisphere". Children will easily understand why the seasons are opposit from the Northen hemisphere.

Argentina and the Fund: From Triumph to Tragedy
Published in Paperback by Institute for International Economics (June, 2002)

Concise and Elegant!I used this book for a business school "Central Banking" class recently. Michael Mussa really knew what he was talking about, and he writes concisely and elegantly.
He analyzed the effects on the Argentinian economy of irresponsbible fiscal and monetary policies. And in the process of doing so, he also convincingly illustrated the intercation between fiscal and monetary policies and its implications in steering the economy in general.
Best book written on Argentinian economy I have ever read. Two-thumbs up!

Fabulous Photos of ArgentinaI don't know what the "For Export" means in the title, but this is the best collection of Argentina photos I have come across. Filled with fabulous color photos of every part of Argentina. Gives the reader a sense of the vast diversity of the country. Captions in Spanish and English.

Argentina Handbook
Published in Hardcover by Footprint Handbooks (January, 1998)
Average review score:

Fantastic.. Best travel handbook around!!!very impressed by the depth of intelligent coverage on history/economics and politics as an added bonus to the extremly helpful maps and local information. Loved the lay-out. The suggestions of HOW a trek to one city could naturally lead to a visit to another... very fluid. Very well done. I have never bought a footprint book before... i think this will be my first of many. A cut above the rest! Even my argentine boyfriend agrees!!

Argentina: Una Travesia Aerea
Published in Paperback by Mack Pub. Co. (November, 1998)
Average review score:

Argentina: Una Travesia AereaI bought this book in a store in Buenos Aires for 150 pesos (U$S 42). The pictures are breathtaking and remind me of the trip I took to Patagonia earlier this year. I highly recommend this book - it has maps of each region and where each photo was taken. It covers all of Argentina, from the romance of Buenos Aires, the beauty of Patagonia (like Alaska for us Americans), and the desolation of the Salta in the north (salt flats). I only wish I would have bought a second copy to give as a gift to family - I figured Amazon would have stocked it, given the quality. Worth the wait and price even if you have to get it here and pay list!!
